GreenSquare gets top green award

GreenSquare has been recognised as one of the most environmentally-friendly housing associations in the country with a prestigious sustainability award.

GreenSquare was awarded 'Silver' in the highly challenging SHIFT Index, a sustainability benchmark for housing associations. The index was developed with the support of WWF-UK, the Tenant Services Authority, Homes and Communities Authority and the UK Green Building Council.

Companies signing up to be assessed by the SHIFT Index commit themselves to being measured against a challenging set of targets for reduced carbon emissions, designed to mitigate against climate change and a broad range of environmental impacts.

Tom Pritchard picked up the award on behalf of GreenSquare: "This award is excellent news," he said. "It was great to be awarded Silver status as this does reflect well on our sustainability profile. There are over 60 RSLs in the assessment and we were ranked above many others!”

Andrew Eagles, Managing Director of Sustainable Homes, secretariat of SHIFT said: “SHIFT provides an independent assessment of sustainability. By having this assessment GreenSquare Group is standing head and shoulders above the rest of the sector. They are illustrating how seriously they take the issues of adaptation and mitigation of climate change.”

Pat Ritchie, Chief Executive of the Homes and Communities Agency, said of the results: “Environmental Sustainability is vitally important – I am encouraged to see that our housing association partners recognise the significance of their role and the impact of their work in this field.”
